Just over a month ago, we reported on the BIOS flash that allowed users of either the Sapphire RX 460 Nitro and ASUS RX 460 Strix O4G to gain approximately 12.5% in performance. The BIOS flash which came courtesy of Roman Hartung (der8auer), who is renowned for his overclocking capabilities. The substantial boost in performance in those cards was such a guaranteed method that Sapphire has gone ahead and released a retail version of the RX 460 that has the stream processors unlocked to the full 1024, up from the default 896 stream processors. Sapphire has played it safe with the Nitro OC version with nothing else being tweaked over the standard version such as clock speeds, or memory.
Now here comes the unfortunate news – it seems that the card is only going to be made available in the Chinese market for some reason, with not much being mentioned on the pricing. While it is great to see Sapphire squeezing out every last bit of performance in these cards, we can’t help but feel like this could be a real greedy move by Sapphire if this is released at a slightly higher price point. They could have quite easily released their own guide and BIOS flash “kit” that would allow users to do it themselves instead of charging for something that is already present. There is a good possibility that a few of these are going to be making the rounds on eBay, however, for those interested in unlocking that hidden performance, we recommend heading over to the unofficial how to guide that you can find here.
